The Oakland Raiders help NFL Network and Comcast celebrate Keep Gym in School 2010
Roosevelt Middle School
Oakland, CA

A huge pep rally and minicamp held in Oakland earlier this week helped to successfully mark the end of Keep Gym In School’s 2010 run of on-site visits. NFL Network, in partnership with Comcast and the Oakland Raiders, celebrated the “adoption” of Roosevelt Middle School during the event, awarding a $25,000 grant to the principal. Roosevelt is using the grant to upgrade and improve the school’s physical education facilities including converting a storage closet into a new dance and fitness room as well as purchase new equipment, including cardio bikes, jump-ropes and basketballs.

NFL RedZone Host Scott Hanson and Comcast SportsNet’s Kate Longworth served as emcees for the pep rally, conveying to students and faculty alike the importance of engaging in physical activities for at least 60 minutes per day.

The rally, which featured performances by the Skyline High School band and cheerleaders, and the Oakland Raiderettes, also included appearances from such notables as California Superintendent Jack O’Connell, Assemblyman Sandre Swanson, Councilwoman Pat Kernighan, PTA President Alice Newscombe, Raiders Chief Executive Amy Trask, and Oakland Raider cornerback/Keep Gym in School 2010-11 National Spokesperson Nnamdi Asomugha.

Following the pep rally, it was Asomugha -- accompanied by Oakland Raiders teammates Michael Huff, Sam Williams, Khalif Barnes, Steve Brown, Walter McFadden, Joe Porter and Rock Cartwright -- who led Roosevelt students out onto their new turf field for the event’s minicamp challenge. Oakland’s shutdown corner first made sure everyone participating had stretched properly, then put the children through a series of workouts and NFL-themed drills. There were even fitness stations on hand (for those interested in measuring their vertical leap or best time in the 40-yard dash)!

Comcast, the Oakland Raiders, and Scott Hanson were happy to team up with NFL Network’s Keep Gym in School initiative for its fifth and final stop of the year, and to teach students about the benefits that come from committing to a lifetime of fitness.

Congratulations Roosevelt!

Florida AHPERD needs your assistance with a national call to action to defeat SB 1644

The State of Florida needs every bit of assistance in contacting Senators to defeat SB 1644, which would eliminate the middle school physical education requirement. We are asking for your support in sending out a "National Call to Action." For more information please click here.

Support the PHYSICAL Act—PE & HE as Core Subjects

Senator Tom Udall has introduced legislation to make physical education and health education core academic subjects within ESEA. S. 3683 would also reauthorize PEP as a stand-alone program, create a new health education grant similar to PEP and make some changes in the Department of Education to emphasize PE and health education. Please contact your Senators and ask them to co-sponsor this important bill. [Take action] Use NASPE's new “PE is an Academic Subject” paper in your advocacy!

Support Physical Education and Health Education in ESEA
