NFL Network and Comcast celebrate Keep Gym in School 2010 with the Pittsburgh Steelers
Arsenal Middle School
Pittsburgh, PA

Arsenal Middle School was the latest school to receive a $25,000 Keep Gym in School physical education grant. NFL Network along with Comcast and the Pittsburgh Steelers were in Pittsburgh, PA to award Arsenal $25,000 to convert their auxiliary gym into a state-of-the-art fitness center.

NFL Network Analyst Rod Woodson, a 10-year Pittsburgh Steelers veteran hosted the event and was very excited to be back in Pittsburgh. Wide Receiver Antwaan Randle El and Running Back Rashard Mendenhall led the school in an exciting pep rally that stressed the importance of staying physically fit and playing for 60 minutes a day.

The gymnasium was filled with cheering students and faculty waving pennants and pom-poms with the whole school was decked out in Pittsburgh Steelers apparel.  The Perry High School cheerleaders and marching band performed for the school and dignitaries including Comcast VP of Operations Paul Navin and Pittsburgh Public School Assistant Superintendent Dr. Linda Lane. Steely McBeam was on hand to pump up the crowd and challenge a Perry High School band member to a dance-off that has become a fun new addition to the Keep Gym in School pep rally.

After the pep rally the students were led on the field by Antwaan and Rashard and participated in a football inspired mini-camp that included warm-ups and football drills.  The students of Arsenal walked away from the event excited to participate in the Play 60 challenge and keep up a lifestyle of fitness.

 Congratulations Arsenal Middle School!

Support the PHYSICAL Act—PE & HE as Core Subjects

Senator Tom Udall has introduced legislation to make physical education and health education core academic subjects within ESEA. S. 3683 would also reauthorize PEP as a stand-alone program, create a new health education grant similar to PEP and make some changes in the Department of Education to emphasize PE and health education. Please contact your Senators and ask them to co-sponsor this important bill. [Take action] Use NASPE's new “PE is an Academic Subject” paper in your advocacy!

Support Physical Education and Health Education in ESEA
